The distressed self-talk language of the mind and body leads to insights about how stress may be affecting us. Self talk or automatic thinking is an inner monologue, which can be positive or negative.

First let’s define terms:

Stress—total of pressures, and demands a person perceives or experiences in their work and life situations.

Dis-stress results when the capacity to accommodate demands and pressures is decreased and our systems are overloaded. Problems arise when the pressure is too great, goes on for too long, or comes from too many directions all at once.

Physical dis-stress is easiest to observe and measure.

Cognitive, psycho-social, and behavioral factors also contribute to a person’s capacity to work safely and productively and be healthy.

Dis-stress Affects Thinking and Behavior Thinking - attention narrows, concentration wanders, decision-making slows, judgment is poor, and problem solving drops off and is less productive

Awareness – search behavior decreases, reactions to peripheral cues slows

Behavior – becomes rigid and inflexible, socially can become inappropriate, team perspective weakens, helping behaviors decrease

These cognitive, psycho-social, and behavioral factors contribute to a our capacity to work safely and productively and be healthy.

Negative stress effects are manageable, not solvable or curable.
